ctrans hangs, but idt works fine?

Question: Difference between idt and ctrans
Situation: I have contoured a 850x645 grid and color filled using 15 colors,
           overlaid a line coutour plot, and added some 20 labels. idt
           can display, zoom, etc. with no problems. ctrans hangs when
           I try any device: ps.color, X11, sgi, hdf, etc.
Guess: Both idt and ctrans work fine with smaller grids: 400x560. I have
       tested the ctrans on ULTRIX 4.3 and IRIX 5.2 on the same gmeta
       file, with the same outcome, process hangs! Does ctrans have a
       restriction that idt does not. Does ctrans have smaller dimensions
       for array sizes?
Help: Anybody have this happen to them? Anybody have a suggestion?
My temporary solution: Screen grabs from idt. This produces poor quaility
                       Postscript and GIF images.
