RE: [ncarg-talk] running idt under cygwin

Mary,

I finally tracked down the cause of idt crashing my X server under cygwin. This was discovered by accident by another colleague of mine when he installed cygwin and NCARG on his laptop. The culprit is in the startxwin.bat file. There is a line in the file that starts the X server. It looks like this.

%RUN% XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error

I had modified it to look like this.

%RUN% XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error +bs

The "+bs" turns on backing store to allow you to cover the idt display window with another and then uncover it without losing the image. Without backing store, idt does not crash the X server. With it turned on, idt crashes the X server if the window is resized or moved.

I was wondering if you could try this and see if you can duplicate the behavior. You need to make sure that the X server is shut down before you start a new one after you modify the startxwin.bat file. Assuming you can duplicate the behavior, is this a cygwin problem or an NCARG problem? The backing store used to work in previous versions of NCARG/cygwin. This behavior is specific only to idt and not other X windows (xclock, xterm ...).

Thanks,
Joe
