I ran into a similar problem in compiling for 64 bit Solaris, it turns out there's a hard-coded Makefile entry in the fontcaps directory where somebody had to compile that routine with a -g option -- well, that just throws a monkey wrench into the whole compile and link scheme since the the make entry ignores ALL the switches we worked so hard to figure out.
