ghostview, X11, nedit

I have a VPN client on my laptop, but on my laptop the command line does not recognize ghostview, X11, or nedit commands so I can't view my images nor edit my scipts in nedit (which I sometimes prefer to vi). What do I have to do in order to be able to use these programs on the portal from my computer?
