Compiling--crtbegin.o error

I am unable to compile anything because I keep getting a, /usr/bin/ld: crtbegin.o no such file or directory, error.

I have Fedora core 3 and pgifortran90
I have an AMD opteron machine.

gcc -v and g++ -v both return
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/3.4.2

crtbegin.o exists in that location.

Any ideas on what to try?
