Problem installing the NCAR graphics library on Linux / IFC

Hi
        I am trying to install NCAR graphics on my Debian Linux machine with IFC. I followed the steps and the process seemed to complete (there were some errors in the HDF part).
        When I came to the testing part :
             ncargex cpex08             ctrans -d X11 cpex08.ncgm
        ctrans is apparently a part of imtools. When I try to install it, I get abunch of errors like :
        Building imstoryboard for i686        Unknown architecture.  Cannot build.
        Is there a saner version of imtools that can build on Linux / i686 ?
        I am using v3.0
