contour labels

     I've created a program that draws contours over the southwestern US and
    part of Mexico and the Pacific. I use a geographic mask so that only the
    contours over the Southwest US are plotted. However, the contour labels are
    plotted everywhere. How do stop the labels from being plotted outside the
    area of interest, i.e. the Southwest?
