idt won't save

We have NCAR Graphics 4.1.1 installed on an SGI Origin 2000.
When idt is used to view a metafile the save button will not
consistently save a frame. It seems to work about 10% of the time
with no apparent pattern. Has this behaviour been found by
anyone else and if so is it fixable?

also the binaries are in my path.
