masking all areas but the US

I'd like to be able to mask out regions of the globe that are NOT over
the continental US for
use in a colorshaded plot. The example in the tutorial shows how to mask
the ocean but not
a specific land region.

I would assume it would involve retrieving the
dataset identifier ('PO', US'...) for the area
and then masking the region if it were not US
however I'm not sure how to get that parameter.
Another idea might be to mask all areas but area 1031 (US).

I'd appreciate any help , code segments, etc.
