NCAR Graphics version 4.0 supports interactive graphics using NCL and
xproto.

NCL (NCAR Command Language) is an interactive command interpreter.
NCL can be run from the command line, or you can write NCL scripts to be
executed in batch mode (as a program). NCL has a full language grammar
with control structures (loops,conditionals,functions). It was designed
to allow data browsing, manipulation, and graphics.

xproto is our first cut at a Graphical User Interface for NCAR Graphics.
It is not yet a complete interface, but it still allows completely
interactive modification of plots. You can even drag plots around on
the screen to move and resize them. xproto is very complete as a plot
editor. However, it is not very easy to read data into the application
at this point. We will be supporting a fully functional GUI at version 4.1.
