Greyscale graphics

I'm a new NCAR graphics user with a very simple question:

Q. Is there any way to covert a color .ncgm file into a
greyscale image in PostScript. I tried ctrans with the
switch -d ps.mono, but it didn't work. You can try out
the color contour colcon.ncgm (a tutorial example in the
package). The command

ctrans -d ps.mono -outfile colcon.ps colcon.ncgm

gives a PostScript file all black as viewed via ghostview.
(I don't know how it looks like as a hard copy, but the
image viewd throu ghostview is so scary to print.)

Any tip(s)/suggestion(s) is (are) appreciated.
